In June 2003, the Microsoft Macintosh Business Unit announced that Internet Explorer for Mac would undergo no further development, and support would cease in 2005. In accordance with published support lifecycle policies, Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005, and will provide no further security or performance updates. Additionally, as of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac will no longer be available for download from Mactopia. It is recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Firefox.

This was just posted on Slashdot.org! Mortimer.CA writes "In a weblog entry, Paul Murphy mentions a Microsoft report (40 page PDF) that in many instances FreeBSD 5.3 and Linux perform better than Windows XP SP2. The report is about MS\’ Singularity kernel (which does perform better than the OSS kernels by many of the metrics they use), and some future directions in OS design (as well as examination of the way things have been done in the past)." From the post: "What’s noteworthy about it is that Microsoft compared Singularity to FreeBSD and Linux as well as Windows/XP - and almost every result shows Windows losing to the two Unix variants. For example, they show the number of CPU cycles needed to "create and start a process" as 1,032,000 for FreeBSD, 719,000 for Linux, and 5,376,000 for Windows/XP."

Again from /.: Anyone who has ever developed a website knows that cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility is a nightmare, mainly due to Microsoft’s willful non-compliance with the CSS2 standard. As this eWeek article points out, it seems Microsoft will continue their poor support for CSS2 even in the IE 7.0 release. This may have worked when IE was the only game in town, but now that Firefox is a serious player, it won’t help them keep market share as they think it will.

On slashdot: “According to Information Week, Firefox usage is now over 6 percent,
pulling Internet Explorer usage down below 90 percent. ‘Firefox is
currently the only browser that is increasing market share on a monthly
basis, and it is growing at the direct expense of Microsoft’s Internet
Explorer’”

(version 20040716, debian sid) This is what I did… I’ve downloaded and runned this tool… wine-config-sidenet-1.2.3.tgz Then I installed dcom98.exe. Then I did a wineboot to reboot the fake windows… Then I installed MSIE6 SP1.
Did a wineboot again… Then I cd-ed to this: ‘cd ~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/Internet Explorer’ Than I runned ‘wine IEXPLORE.EXE’. After that the wizzard popped up, I pressed ‘CANCEL’ and checked the box to not show the wizzard again, and then I opened a beer bottle ;) AI ;)

Found this on /.: IamTheRealMike writes “In January, Microsoft announced a new anti-piracy initiative called Genuine Advantage. From this summer onwards all users of Microsoft Downloads will be required to validate using either an ActiveX control or a standalone tool. Yesterday Ivan Leo Puoti, a Wine developer, discovered that the validation tool checks directly for Wine and bails out with a generic error when found. This is significant as it’s not only the first time Microsoft has actively discriminated against users running their programs via Wine, but it’s also the first time they’ve broken radio silence on the project.”
This is one of the reasons to quit using Microsoft products… They always want to make more mony.

Please, take a look at a Mozilla based browser like Firefox or Netscape. There are several reasons for you why. MSIE is not RFC compliant, several normal HTML, DHTML, CSS2 and JavaScript methods don’t work or does something different than it should do when MSIE is RFC compliant. An other thing is that MSIE is loaded with bug and security issues. And we’re still waiting for Microsoft to solve those. Most of the Mozilla based browsers are GPL/open source projects. That means that the geeks and hackers can view the source and find bugs and security holes faster and solve the problem with a patch, wich can be mailed back to the project developers, so they can implement it.
We webdevelopers are now building for every site two versions of the layout, one for normal browsers and one for MSIE, just because Microsoft thinks that RFC stands for ‘Read F*ck’n Complain’… So they don’t read those…

UPDATED 13 aug 2003! Removal tool is available for ‘Blaster’ worm! My brother and some friends just called me today, they are running Windows XP and there computer is shutting down out of the blue… They get a count down box and the computer is shutting down when it’s to 0. Now I did some research… It’s a worm named ‘blaster’. You should activate or install a firewall! Look here for more info and the worm removal tools: http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.aspI think those worms and virruses are a great thing. Why? Because I think it’s the only way to force you to think about your security and the developers about there source code, architecture and fast bug fixes! Don’t be a sheep! Think it trough when your installing or downloading something! Is it tested right? What security issues can be found at google? What is the reputation of the software? Did YOU read the manual??
