Internet & Fun & Windows Daantje on 30 Jan 2003
Posted by michael on Thursday January 30, @09:02AMfrom the someone-will-surpass-it-soon dept. nautical9 writes “Following the same devious footsteps of the infamous Bonzi Buddy, Gator, and Comet Cursor “enhancements”, Xupiter now has their own self-installing toolbar for IE. There are many claims that if you leave your security preferences at their default level, it will install itself without your express permission. And once on your system, it’s gracious enough to reset your homepage to xupiter.com, forward all your searches to their search engine, download and automatically launch applications (like gambling applets), and blocks all attempts to set these back to normal. Removing it isn’t trivial either - it automatically checks for updates upon reboot, where it constantly changes the registry settings it uses, making the jobs of spyware removal programs like AdAware or Spybot Search & Destroy much harder. No word yet if it collects and forwards personal data.”More on /.

After trying all drivers for the Prism2 chipset, Debian updated there Orinoco/Hermes driver, and it works! But it only works for me when I run it as a dynamic kernel module ([M]), not when I compile it into the kernel ([*])!!! I will post what stuff you’ll have to select in menuconfig later. If you wanna know now, drop me an email.

Here’s how you can gain root acces on your MacOS X jaguar 10 installation. Start your Macintosh and hold down the command (the apple key) and S. It will boot with a shell, then type (without the quotes!) “/sbin/mount -wu /” This will mount your system disk. Then type “/sbin/SystemStarter” Now it will boot all systems and wil give you a root shell. Now change the password so you can acces it with “su” in a terminal, with “passwd root“. Then do CTRL - D to exit and the system will boot the MacOS X GUI again… That’s it.There’s a fix for it, look for it on http://www.securemac.com/

Yeah! I’ve bought a ‘NetGear MR314′ wireless ADSL router, and it works like a charm! I use it now to connect to the net. It was a bit asking around to configure the box right. What I did was: Wizard -> PPTP. Now it comes… You’ll have to put in your username and passw. Below that it’s asking for WAN settings. My IP, should be the IP of the netgearbox. In my case 10.0.0.150. Server IP address should be the IP of the ADSL router, in my case 10.0.0.138. Connection ID/Name was in my case ‘pc1′, but I don’t know if this was required. Than I finished the configuration. Now I could ping IP’s, but no domain names, so I went to the router config again, clicked ‘advanced’, and then ‘LAN’. There I filled the DHCP DNS settings to the DNS servers of my provider. (Check the DNS settings you should use with your provider.) Than it all worked!!

Just found a nice and handy way to get rid of all that spam, using fetchmail, procmail and this nifty script! Get it here: spastic.sourceforge.netNote: After installing it, all my mail bounced. After I had changed the .forward file and removed the ‘exec’ command to: “| /usr/bin/procmail”, than I could reseave mail again…
Personal Daantje on 19 Jan 2003
I’ve added a new topic, “HOWTO’s“. Here I will post how I configged most of my stuff, like my MXsteam ADSL account. I don’t give support on it, I only posted it in the hope it is helping someone.

Okay, I have an inernal network, and MXstream over a pptp connection. (But this should work with any ppp/eth0 connections.) Here is a way to masqurade it to your eth0 device. (I personaly use it to have internet on my VMware workstation ;)) Before you begin, you should have the following stuff compiled into your kernel: (cd /usr/src/linux;make menuconfig;)
Then I runned the following script to config the masquerading: (the script should be ‘chmod +x’ and be run as root.)
#!/bin/sh #### START MASQUERADE ############## # Init kernel module. Can be remarked, when compiled into the kernel # modprobe ipt_MASQUERADE; # If this fails, try continuing anyway iptables -F; iptables -t nat -F; iptables -t mangle -F; iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE; echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward; #### START SECURITY ############## #for a dial-up connection (with eth0 as the internal network card): iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT; iptables -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -i ! ppp0 -j ACCEPT; iptables -P INPUT DROP; #only if the first two are succesful iptables -A FORWARD -i ppp0 -o ppp0 -j REJECT;
Now you should config all client gateways to the IP address from your eth0 device. Im my case, I had to set the gateway of my VMware Win98 network to the address of my eth0; 10.0.0.242. The IP address of the Win98 is set to 10.0.0.243, and subnetmask 255.255.255.0. The DNS is set to my accesss provider XS4ALL, 194.109.104.104. I’m using ADSL4linux (www.adsl4linux.nl) to connect to MXstream.
